Critics' Corner
Frank Picchione Your Host
It was a pleasure to (accidently) find "Pita Place," the best little (Mediterranean Cuisine) restaurant in Las Vegas!
Andre and his sister, Nora, have created a quiet atmosphere full of the Mediterranean!
They have taken a small Taco Bell type building, renovated it, sound-proof'd windows on the street and soft music of
the Mediterranean soothing you while you dine. Don't take out! Sit down at one of their
comfortable tables and enjoy the atmosphere! If you must, go ahead and order to go.
Parking
There is almost no excuse for dining in with the ample parking on all three sides of the building as you will see
in the photos below. When I built a Thai restaurant in Anaheim, California in 1987, I didn't know
what I was doing (the developer -- literally, had to get a waiver for lot size and limited parking.)
Not at Pita Place! There is even a driveway that flows with the southbound Jones Boulevard for easy
in'n out.
The Menu
When I looked at the selections on the menu, ie, Salads & Appetizers, I immediately caught my eye on the "Greek Salad"
and only hesitated for a moment because of the price. When the salad bowl arrived, there was enough for
my wife and myself and for our dinner, or two more!
The portions are large with your order the "small" or for a group (or hungry couple) the "large."
Instead of making a pig out of myself, I was thinking of dinner and decided to save plenty for the evening.
I grew up in a small town south of Boston, Massachusetts and most of the people were either Italian like me, or
Greek. My best friend was Greek, Yani (John,) and together we would entertain our families playing
the mandolins with tunes of the day. How many of you remember "Never on Sunday.."?
I can still humm a few bars... I was fortunate to be able to learn of both cultures of the
Mediterranean and have a friend from Greece.
Speaking with Nora, the sister of the owner Andre, she explained to me that Mediterranean cuisine is very similar
whether from Greece or Lebanon and the smell and flavor is enticing.
Hummus
All "Pita Place" menu items are authentic Mediterranean (by Mediterranean people.) Hummus is worth
trying. I eat it like most Americans would eat chips'n dip!
Ask Andre, or Nora, or your server to bring you a small sauce-like dipping cup to sample it -- then, get ready to
place your order for the large bowl!
Do yourself a favor, if you are not familiar with Mediterranean cuisine because we certainly our lacking in our town
for choices and options, and ask what they recommend for a beginner. Don't be scared by the names!
Enjoy
