You either like the approach, the graphic integration,
but you will be making a trade-off in several areas including
business communication message in the form of extensive text
and a maintenance approach that may be different to non-programmers.
Some of you may be considering integrating Macromedia Flash with your website or web publishing.
At this time, Shop Las Vegas has limited support for such services and we want you
to understand why not to deter you, but to make sure that it is right for you too.

Infomercials
YouTube has made possible for just about anyone to upload a FLV video file and get noticed.
The business application of this is no different where you would take a basic HTML page, linked to your homepage,
for instance and embed a FLV commercial, "live."
Depending on what your product or service is, you would create a video (with audio, of course) and convert to
"Flash" for this purpose. "How to" is a terrific category, eg,
NYC Dent Werks.
At Shop Las Vegas, we have added a few "How to's" on our
Dent Repair page to make it more robust.
This approach is fine and anyone can create a link to YouTube, but there is one drawback where
your video clip will be categorized with both amateur works as well as your competitors.
The better approach is to use the concept and embed in your own page which isolates your message.

To the right, you have an illustration of embedded advertisements for various shops in the Chicago area.
You have a moderate size window with a scroll list below it for selection of the various shops.
Illustrations
There is nothing better than
illustrations to get our point across and in order to do that, we have
evaluated two leading Flash vendors, Trendy Flash and LusciousDesign dot-com. In the right margin,
you will find links to several products from Trendy Flash that allow anyone to build their own intro splash
screen, or a complete website.
Defining Flash
It is the integration with graphics, motion with publishing business communication.
The emphasis is on multi-media with not only animated graphics, but audio.
Expect to pay top dollar for a quality splash page design integrating Flash, and only you
can say whether the cost is worth it. Click on the image below of Edgewater Condo Rentals for an
excellent example. After you experience it, you will understand why potential tenants will want
to take a look around. A combination of length (in time) and content is superb.
Trendy Flash offers two builders: one for an
intro splash screen and the other for the
entire website.
The published results is capsulized for you and maintenance is through its software products
that take you (literally) step by step.
Pros and cons to this approach
Easy to use, many
templates for themes and gallery add-ons as well as your own images, eg, logos.
Negative, though, is dependents for all maintenance work because the software builder
creates a special Flash file
(swf) and you do not have access to any generated
source code to tweak
same. In most incidents, other than pros, you wouldn't want to really change the source
code generated anyways. Run Trial Version code.
Builders are severely limited in
business communication message area. If you prefer a
balance of graphic animation and text, then Flash may be for you. If you think in terms
of "cool" and "awesome," younger generation and/or product or service is oriented towards such a market,
then Flash may be for you.
Macromedia/Adobe offer for programmers (professional programmers) a developer's product, Flash 8,
at this publishing. See link to the right. There is also a Player Module
that may be useful from Adobe for portability offline, etc.
Warning: make do doubt about it, if you decide to take the approach of purchasing the
Developer's Package, Flash 8, that you should have a programmer's background to be successful.
My attention was brought to this vendor by a television commercial for a real estate broker in the
Las Vegas area, Negotiate4uLV.com that uses this approach,
a vendor that provides everything for one price, A-Z from a website builder to web-hosting.
We believe .. "A happy customer is an informed customer."
Is it really what you want, or a fad?
The Splash Intro has "Skip Intro" for a good reason .. boring.
To illustrate this power (movie) control media, we have selected, at random,
several good ones, ie, pizzaz. But, we ask you -- try this (published) page layout
using these Flash tools .. impossible unless (literally) programmed (by a professional $$$.)
Now, if you don't mind spending $175/hour for several hours work, full day to a week,
to design and then have it maintained, fine.
As a professional programmer of three decades as well as businessman, notice the publishing limitations
in text windows, just to have "flying" plates and bizarre backgrounds that usually have horrible contrasting
colors. Notice the font colors, eg, white on black,
yellow on .. [fill in the blank.]
Don't attempt this -- dark gray/photo; black text.
Or, pack a
scroll window with text, all caps; with a "cutesy" graphic that is not relevant at all .. at least,
to real estate home sellers, or for that matter,
buyers too.
Green on gray is another font/contrast background "no .. no."
Notice, in all four illustrations, the author attempted to overcome the contrast issue of the text
by using (unprofessional) all caps. Of course, part of the problem is the format restrictions and
having nothing pertinent to place in the photo window and in
this illustration, "under construction" which should be dismissed like
the plague. And, never publish instructions that are not
complete. In this case,
"www.cox.net" versus the email address to "click" on.
Who is who, with three agent's names??? Is it "top to
bottom" assumed? Instead, why not click on a thumbnail
photo of the agent, and only information on that agent appear in the text window along with a full-size photo?
Of course, all of the above publishing mistakes are amateur and righfully so because the author is not a professional
designer or publisher and just the restrictions of the Flash builder tool "Luscious Design" provided them, well,
what do you expect? Try the "live" website below, and see how fast you "tire" of the "movie action"
of rebuilding each screen, window and the delays. Just doing these seven illustrations to point out
the weakness of (a) the restrictive builder format and (b) the deficiencies in the publishing, made me want to
finish and "click" away to something else...
"Sorry, Negotiate4ULV, but your site really sucks.."
MySpace is built around Flash components which is also creating a new market for developer tools, eg,
FreeSourceCode.
Here is a good example of a magazine publisher that has retreated to the free space, networking,
to be found on MySpace, without the overhead cost of a URL, etc.
The last significant point that I can think of at the moment is that I am not willing to give up 60-75% of my
real estate (pund intended) to graphic imagery, movie action bizarre to business communication message.
How many screens would it have taken to convey this lecture, as an example?
Traditional measures for determining a website (publishing) success: No. 1 is navigation, logical relation
of the pages, or in this case "plates," flying around the screen, user waiting for things to settle down every time
they do anything, well, you be the judge, ie, forewarned.
HTML Option .. Good idea, if you want to keep people coming back.
Strictly Flash Only .. .. bye.
Embed Infomercial .. This type of production is excellent for adding multi-media versus
dedicated approach.
Self-Study Guides .. For both programmers and amateur publishers.

Note: many of these self-study guides come with a CD that is useful for examples
and other items, eg, templates.
The hottest scripting language since JavaScript, and shows you how to create interactive Web applications with a minimum of time and effort. This friendly guide shows you how to tap interactivity to create online surveys, forms, e-commerce applications, Web navigational tools, and the flashiest buttons on the Web. Flash 5 For Dummies provides a light-hearted but thorough reference for anyone who wants to understand this bestselling tool quickly and in plain English. The authors cover each topic simply but in enough detail to make it useful. You will be able to quickly find any topic they need and get back to work without delay (not that we have anything against coffee breaks). The book is in the order you would use the program to create Web animation, also progressing from simple to complex. Beginners will be able to read the book from start to finish while intermediate users can look up only the sections they want. Flash has a high cross-platform profile. Luckily, one of the authors (Gurdy) is a Mac freak; the other (Ellen) is a PC stalwart.
(IDG Books) A guide to creating lively and attractive Web sites with Flash 5, without the complex language to get in the way. Flash offers a way to simplify your work, called symbols. A symbol can be any object or combination of objects, animation, or a Web button. When you create a symbol, the objects (or animation) become one symbol. The difference is that Flash stores the definition of the symbol in the Library. From the library, you can now effortlessly insert multiple copies of the symbol into your movie. Each copy is called an instance.
Besides making your life easier when you want to use a set of objects more than once, symbols have another advantage: They significantly reduce the size of your files. Rather than store each instance you use, Flash stores one definition for the symbol and only refers to the definition each time you display an instance of the symbol. Turning a bunch of objects into a symbol helps reduce file size even when you use the symbol only once, because Flash remembers only one object rather than many. Backgrounds that aren't animated can therefore be combined into one symbol.
You can place symbols inside other symbols. Used this way, symbols are the building blocks for complex graphics and animation. Motion-tweened animation requires symbols, groups, or text, so you often create symbols when preparing to animate.
So, symbols are all-around good guys, and you should use them as much as possible.
The book covers graphic, movie clip, and button symbols.
Each type is made up of a group of objects or animation, but each type has a different purpose. Understanding these types is very important to understanding symbols and Flash animation in general.

Contacts Television Production .. for your information and budget advertising, here is a L.A.-based production
company, Spot Runner, Inc. that has a model for entering your advertising budget plans and
areas you wish to have
exposure.
The model provides for analysis of three fixed weekly campaigns as well as
you can specify just how many weeks you want to run your advertising spot on television.
These advertising budgets start as low as $10,500 for a
4 Week Campaign and up to $31,500 for a
12 Week Campaign; with a moderate plan
for 8 Week Campaign for $21,000.
Weekly Budget
The model exercises a conservative spot ad schedule for each
week where you could actually reduce
the cost to $1,750 versus a conservative $2,625 to a $4,375 budget. Now, the model does not
explain whether we are talking about a 15-second spot, a 30-second spot or a 60-second spot nor the "frequency"
during that weekly period. Irregardless, be prepared for a large budget, eg, $10,500 (minimum)
for one month.
Print Media
It is interesting how many phone inquiries we get with people
thinking that they are going to spend as little as $50 or as low as $250 for any type of display ad in a print media.
Now, in the Summer of 2004, we tried (or threw away) $1,000 in an advertising budget that
included the Las Vegas Review Journal, 4x/1 cpi, Nifty Nickel, 6x/service directory and El Mundo, 1x/1 display ad
and the El Tiempo Libre for 6x/service directory in a special $300 package with the Nifty Nickel.
Needless to say, there was no response from all those display ads (not classifieds now,) and you should expect to
budget for at least $5,000 to test the media.
See our Media Budget Chart.
